Easy Transition to Shampoo Bar | The Bam&Boo Blog | Bam&Boo Bamboo Toothbrush

You don’t have to choose between beautiful hair and sustainable beauty. But let’s be honest: switching to natural hair care takes time. Learn here how to start and overcome difficulties as well as master optimal use of your shampoo bar.

To all women and men out there: we believe that it’s easier to switch to a shampoo bar than to change your hairstyle :) And you should never have to choose between beautiful hair and sustainable beauty, right?

We are upfront and authentic about the transition to a shampoo bar: it takes up to 2-4 weeks for your scalp to adjust and rebalance its natural oil production. So patience is a crucial  ingredient not listed in the packaging.

Based on our community feedback and team’s personal experience, shampoo bar’s effectiveness, fair price and sustainability are top priorities. Obviously we are strong advocates of refusing plastic in the bathroom and bringing more natural and true products to our everyday care, thus minimizing their environmental impact.

True or False?

7 ideas to help you switch or persevere in the use of a shampoo bar

Less Packaging - 7 ideas to help you switch or persevere in the use of a shampoo bar - Easy Transition to Shampoo Bar - The Bam&Boo Blog

 One-size-fits-all shampoo bar - False

You need to choose your shampoo bar the same way as you pick a liquid shampoo according to your hair type: oily, dry or normal. Learn more here.

Solid bar is less practical than liquid shampoo - True

Likewise body soap and shower gel, right? Soap is naturally more slippery. But it’s all about getting into the natural routine of grabbing the shampoo bar mindfully with your hands. Yes, it’s less practical, but be reminded that it’s travel friendly. Check here 5 steps to easy optimal use of a shampoo bar.

It is not possible to change the genetics of hair - True

Curly, straight, wavy, coiled, thick, thin, you name it. It comes with genes. And this definitely influences your hair care. The environment can also have a big impact on hair, especially the texture. So come to terms with your hair reality and don’t fully blame it on the shampoo bar.

Liquid shampoo lasts longer than solid shampoo bar - False

Actually one shampoo bar equals two bottles of liquid shampoo. The same goes for the conditioner bar. It’s undeniable the duration which helps reinforcing the fair price of this sustainable option.

Conservation of shampoo bar is challenging - True

Indeed, especially towards the end of use. Always keep it in a container or find a simple saucer. The best tip to optimize the last bit of the bar is to glue it on top of the new shampoo bar. This way the old and new shampoo bars merge as one. And celebrate your 100% plastic-free shampoo!

Liquid shampoos have better scent - False

Not really. Rest assured that there are yummy-smelling scents in a wide variety of natural ingredients, not harmful to your body nor to the planet. Avocado (hummm!), Olive Oil and Rosemary (our juicy cocktail for hydration and protection), Aloe Vera, Citrus Lavender, Coconut Milk, Tea-tree Oil, Peppermint, Lemon and Orange Extracts, Mango Butter (stop it!). You better not be hungry, because you’ll have the urge to eat some of these bars :) Get in the habit of checking the ingredients list - no tricky words, natural is easy to pin down - experiment with different brands and choose for yourself.

Less packaging - True

Refusing plastic and reducing packaging is the best choice for the environment. But we also want to make it all very simple for you. So one shampoo bar equals 2 bottles of liquid shampoo. Likewise one conditioner bar equals 2 regular bottles of liquid conditioner. And packaging is completely recyclable.

5 steps to optimal use of your shampoo bar

1. Wet your hair

The wetter your hair is, the easier it will be to apply the shampoo bar.

2. Get your shampoo bar slightly wet

It is helpful to lather up the shampoo bar slightly before use, under the shower. Rub it around in your hands. Do this for about 10 to 30 seconds.

3. Rub the shampoo bar directly onto your scalp

Or you may also just use the lather produced around your hands. Be aware that some shampoo bars don’t produce lather. The amount of shampoo you need, it will depend on your particular hair type. So rub with gentle pressure the shampoo bar back and forth across the top of your head until your hair and scalp are very soapy.

If you have very thick or long hair, you may need to part your hair down the middle and/or ear-to-ear so you can reach all areas of your scalp. This step can take longer depending on the length of your hair. But don’t get discouraged!

4. Massage evenly all of your soapy hair

Once your scalp is well covered in soapy bubbles, focus on massaging the product with your fingertips (never your nails!) across all of your hair. This is your pampering moment, in silence, with no running water from the shower head for a sustainable conscious option.

5. Rinse your hair completely

Once you feel satisfied, place your head under the stream of water, and rinse your hair until all of the shampoo is removed. This may take a few minutes depending on how thick and long your hair is.

If you need and/or like conditioner, for a softer and brighter look, this will be the next step. Just follow the same guidelines as for the shampoo bar, bearing in mind the longer it stays covering all of your hair, before rinsing, the softer the effect.

What do men prefer in a shampoo bar?

What do men prefer in a shampoo bar? - Easy Transition to Shampoo Bar - The Bam&Boo Blog

Men have shorter hair, thus making it easier to make the switch from liquid shampoo to shampoo bar. However, they also have hair issues. Check here a short list of our male community highlights on shampoo bars:

The best

  • Reduce plastic in the bathroom
  • Cut on harmful ingredients
  • Vegan & cruelty-free
  • Everyday use speeds up adaptation (minimum of 2 weeks)

The worst

  • Not practical, very slippery
  • Difficult to shape hair with wax (i.e.) after washing it
  • Less variety of scents
  • Conservation until the very end
