Why are Bamboo Toothbrushes Better Than Plastic?
(3 Main Reasons)

Why are Bamboo Toothbrushes Better Than Plastic? (3 Main Reasons) | The Bam&Boo Blog | Bam&Boo Bamboo Toothbrush

Are you still wondering why you should pick a bamboo toothbrush over a plastic toothbrush?

Here's why:

The plastic problem

plastic toothbrushes ocean pollution

You already know that plastic toothbrushes account for a global waste problem. Plastic is cheap, versatile and valuable resource in many ways. However, it has created a disposable lifestyle. 50% of plastic is just used once and thrown away.

Bottles, straws, coffee cups, beverage containers, plastic bags, cutlery, cotton buds… the list is long and we all know it.This is indeed a major concern. But the good news is that it’s entirely up to us to take the first step: to refuse.

Plastic pollution is an unsustainable waste of that resource and it has become an environmental issue. So basically, do you want to continue being part of the problem or are you ready to take a small step to reduce our collective plastic footprint?

The problem with plastic toothbrushes

plastic toothbrush versus bamboo toothbrushes

Plastic toothbrushes are made from polypropylene plastic (handle) and nylon (bristles), which are both sourced from non-renewable fossil fuels. They are essentially indestructible, which means thatthe first toothbrush we had when we were kids is still hanging around in some form, somewhere polluting Mother Earth

Every year billions of plastic toothbrushes are thrown away. They are dumped into our oceans or end up in landfills, where they sit around for about 1000 years before finally breaking down.

Take note of this not so fun fact:If we displayed the toothbrushes thrown away in the United States in a year, they would wrap around the Earth four times!

Another staggering fact is thatby 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish by weight.Quite scary, don’t you think? But the environmental damage is entirely preventable, if we take a small and simple action: switch to a biodegradable toothbrush.

The advantages of bamboo toothbrushes

plastic toothbrush versus bamboo toothbrushes

Bamboo toothbrushes are an eco-friendly alternative, because bamboo is a natural plant, fully biodegradable, thus a renewable and sustainable resource. It is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet so we don’t need to worry about running out any time soon.

Besides, we use a species called mosu bamboo, which is totally organic and wild, it doesn’t need fertilisers, pesticides or irrigation. Plus, it doesn’t compromise our dearest pandas diet. Therefore, it is the perfect material for the handle.

As for bristles on bamboo toothbrushes they should be bpa free causing less impact on our health. Our bamboo toothbrushes are nylon 6 bpa free bristles and we also deliver them in a kraft paper bag and fully recyclable paper packaging.

Finally, you should know that the bamboo toothbrush still needs to be disposed of or composted properly for maximum environmental friendliness. Check out our tips here.

In the end of the day, even though the Bam&Boo toothbrush is not 100% biodegradable, the most important thing is that you are still taking a huge step towards reducing your plastic waste in the environment.

Hey Lesley, the bristles are made from nylon 6 BPA free and should be recycled with plastic. What we recommend is taking them off, with pliers for example, and placing them in the plastic recycle bin.
You can check our blog post on “How to dispose a bamboo toothbrush” :)

Quick question (might be a silly question). Are your toothbrushes made of bamboo fibres? And if so what are they held together with? Thanks.
